Mama, Don’t Give Up On Your Dreams! How To Pursue Your Passions (While Raising A Family)

All Things Parenting· All Things Wellness· Finances

7 Feb

Motherhood is a beautiful, sacred calling that is and has always been a huge passion of mine—but if I’m being honest, it’s also exhausting. Between the extracurricular activities, meal preps, homework, and endless laundry, it’s easy to feel like our personal dreams have been shelved indefinitely.

Because of this, if you choose to pursue your passions beyond motherhood, you are one of very few. Often, we find it hard to believe there’s room for another dream when we can’t even find time for a shower. But hear me loud and clear, Mama:

God placed those dreams in your heart for a reason, and motherhood doesn’t cancel them out!

If you’ve ever felt like your dreams are on hold, or worse, that they no longer matter, this post is your reminder that they absolutely do. You are more than “just” a mom—you are a woman with God-given gifts, talents, and passions. And guess what? Your dreams and motherhood can coexist!

WHY you should pursue your passions beyond motherhood

Many moms feel guilty for wanting something beyond their family responsibilities. But having dreams outside of motherhood doesn’t make you a bad mom—it makes you a whole, thriving person. Your children need to see you chase after the purpose God has for you. They need to know that dreams don’t have an expiration date just because life gets busy.

It’s okay if you’re a mom whose dream goes beyond motherhood. One day, your kids will fly the coop, and what will you do? I know, it’s hard to imagine having all that spare time. Well, I encourage you to examine your heart, your giftings, talents, callings, and passions. There’s something else in there; I’m sure of it!

So, what dreams should you refuse to give up on? Maybe you already know what it is, or maybe you don’t. Here are a few areas to consider:

1. GOING BACK TO COLLEGE OR CONTINUING EDUCATION

Maybe you never finished your degree, or you’ve always wanted to pursue further education. Online courses and part-time classes are more accessible than ever, making it possible to balance learning with family life. Investing in your education can open doors for new career opportunities or simply help you grow in knowledge and confidence.

Why not take that course on photography that will fulfill a passion of yours and provide you with beautiful memories of your family? Be a lifelong learner and grow your skills. You never know in what way they may be useful in your future!

2. PURSUING A NEW CAREER (OR CHANGING CAREERS!)

Who says you have to stay in the same job forever? Maybe you’ve been a stay-at-home mom and feel called to re-enter the workforce, or perhaps you want to pivot into a completely different field. With remote work and flexible job options, moms have more opportunities than ever to build a career that fits their family life.

I once felt tied to my previous career of clinical laboratory science because of all the time and education I had in the field. Now, I’m not afraid to let that go. My dreams are based on passion, not just practicality.

3. dream big by STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS

That side hustle or business idea that keeps nagging at you? It’s time to give it some serious thought! Whether it’s starting an Etsy shop, launching a coaching business, selling handmade products, or offering freelance services, there are endless ways to turn your passion into a profitable venture.

Maybe you aren’t interested in running a full-time business, but why not pursue an outlet for your creative mind while making money? Check out this post for more ideas on side hustles that you can squeeze in during your spare time.

4. pursue your passions for VOLUNTEER AND MINISTRY WORK

Maybe your heart is pulling you toward ministry, community service, or mission work. Whether it’s serving at your church, mentoring young women, or starting a nonprofit, these dreams matter. Your impact goes beyond your household—God may be calling you to make a difference in your community.

Passion isn’t always a service we need to be paid for, nor is it expensive to pursue. If you love hospitality, coffee is cheap to offer, but your wisdom may provide endless value to another human’s life.

5. WRITING THAT BOOK (OR STARTING A BLOG!)

If you’ve always had a passion for writing, it’s time to stop waiting for the “perfect” moment. Whether you want to write a book, launch a blog, or start a podcast, your words have the power to inspire and encourage others. Your unique story and wisdom can bless so many people! You just have to start! If you’re needing a little help, check out this article on How to Write a Book: A Step-by-Step Guide. I really like how this author takes such a daunting task and breaks it down into small doable steps.

6. TRAVELING AND EXPERIENCING NEW ADVENTURES

Who says moms have to stay put? Traveling with kids is possible, and so is taking time for solo trips or couple’s getaways. If seeing the world (or just more of your own country) is a dream of yours, start making a plan to make it happen! Traveling on a budget is possible if you put the time into planning!

7. PRIORITIZING HEALTH, FITNESS, AND PERSONAL GROWTH

Your physical, emotional, and spiritual health matters. God made us as triune beings and we have triune needs. Whether it’s running a marathon, developing a new hobby, or deepening your faith journey, your personal growth should never take a backseat. When you take care of yourself, you’re a better mom, wife, and woman overall.

HOW TO PURSUE YOUR passions beyond motherhood– WITHOUT mom-GUILT

  • Pray About It—Ask God for wisdom, clarity, and guidance on how to pursue your dreams in a way that honors Him and your family.
  • Start Small—You don’t have to do everything at once! Take baby steps—enroll in one class, write one blog post, or start researching business ideas.
  • Find Support—Surround yourself with like-minded moms who encourage you rather than discourage you.
  • Use Your Time Wisely—Early mornings, nap times, and after bedtime can be golden hours for working on your dreams.
  • Let Go of Mom Guilt—Your kids will be blessed by seeing you walk in your purpose!

YOU WERE CREATED FOR MORE.

Motherhood is an incredible blessing, but it’s not the only part of who you are. You were created for more—not in a way that diminishes the beauty of being a mom, but in a way that honors the fullness of who God made you to be.

For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us]. Ephesians 2:10 AMP

So, Mama, don’t give up on your dreams. Pursue your passions beyond motherhood! Dust them off, pray over them, and start taking steps to make them a reality. Your dreams are worth it, and so are you!

What’s a dream you’ve been holding onto? Share it in the comments—I’d love to cheer you on!
